The Glyphosate Impact: What You Need to Know
Glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide globally, has infiltrated our food supply, posing significant health risks. Sprayed on crops shortly before harvest and present in integrated animal feeding, Glyphosate has seeped into the very fabric of our food system. Shockingly, it has been detected in 75% of foods and 90% of beer and wine products in the US alone.
Despite efforts to conceal its true impact, the truth about Glyphosate’s health risks is emerging, with California labeling it as Known to the State of California to Cause Cancer for purposes of Proposition 65; The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, Health and Safety Code section 25249.5 et seq. Glyphosate’s disruption of the gut microbiome has been linked to a host of health issues, from gastrointestinal diseases to autoimmune disorders, prompting concern worldwide. Further, the World Health Organization (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has released a statement on March 20th, 2015 which classified the herbicide glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans.
On August 10, 2018, a jury in the Superior Court of California, San Francisco County, unanimously ruled that Roundup, manufactured by Monsanto, induced Dewayne Johnson’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). Monsanto was found guilty of design and warning defects, negligence and breach of implied warranties, and ordered to pay $290 million in damages.
On January 25, 2024 a consortium of six NGOs – PAN Europe, ClientEarth (EU), Générations Futures (France), GLOBAL 2000 (Austria), PAN Germany, and PAN Netherlands – has officially launched a legal challenge against the European Commission’s recent decision to re-approve glyphosate. After conducting a detailed examination of the glyphosate re-approval process and identifying several critical shortcomings, the NGOs submitted a Request for Internal review to the Commission, marking the first step in this legal battle.
